Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta is a 50-episode anime series set in the Universal Century timeline (U.C. 0087), taking place seven years after the events of the original Mobile Suit Gundam.
The story follows Kamille Bidan, a gifted and impulsive young pilot of the iconic MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam, equipped with a transformation system that allows it to change into a high-speed aircraft mode, who becomes embroiled in a conflict between the Anti-Earth Union Group (AEUG) and the oppressive Earth Federation's elite Titans task force.
Kamille joins the AEUG after a personal tragedy and becomes the pilot of the powerful and Alongside Kamille, the series features key characters such as Quattro Bajeena, an experienced pilot and strategist who operates the MSN-00100 Hyaku Shiki, and Captain Bright Noa, now leading the AEUG's assault cruiser Argama. The series also introduces a new generation of pilots, such as Emma Sheen, Jerid Messa and Four Murasame, a Cyber-Newtype with whom Kamille develops a complex relationship.
Zeta Gundam showcases several new mobile suits, including the RMS-099 Rick Dias, the PMX-003 The O, the MRX-009 Psycho Gundam, and the RMS-108 Marasai. The series also features the now iconic RX-178 Gundam Mk-II, initially used by the Titans before falling into the hands of the AEUG.
The narrative of Zeta Gundam explores the darker aspects of war, politics, betrayal, and the evolution of humanity into Newtypes, humans with heightened mental awareness and abilities.
Zeta closely follows the original Gundam in terms of aesthetics, the main suits remaining closer to the RX-78-2 while not allowing it to keep the designs stale, for most mobile suits feature transformations that allows them to adapt to new ways of war, ensuring that both fans of the traditional real robot are not left to hang while others who enjoy a more futuristic approach into warfare are also represented.
