There are some techniques or school of thought in the model kit world that focuses on adding visual effects to miniatures and models alike to achieve an used, well-worn look known as weathering where you will find effects such as rust, corrosion, mud or dust while chipping focuses on battle damage such as scratches, gouges... These two combined allow to tell a history through the usage of paint and are a focal point for many builders.

When trying to achieve these finishes, there's a multitude of tools and techniques to take advantage of but most builders focus on weathering pigments, washes and chipping paint.
