Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn is a seven-episode OVA series, based on the novel by Harutoshi Fukui, and part of the Universal Century (UC) timeline.
Set in U.C. 0096, three years after the events of Char's Counterattack, the story follows Banagher Links, a young student at Anaheim Electronics' Industrial College located in the space colony Industrial 7.
Banagher becomes the pilot of the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam, equipped with an unique psychoframe-based transformation.
Various factions become involved in the pursuit of Laplace's Box, including the Earth Federation's Londo Bell task force, led by Captain Bright Noa, and the Sleeves, a remnant group of the Principality of Zeon led by Full Frontal, a charismatic and enigmatic figure dubbed "The Second Coming of Char Aznable" who is at the helm of the MSN-06S Sinanju.
The Sleeves pilot various iconic mobile suits, such as the NZ-666 Kshatriya, piloted by Marida Cruz. Other notable characters include Riddhe Marcenas who pilots the RGM-89S Stark Jegan and later the MSN-001A1 Delta Plus and the RX-0[N] Unicorn Gundam 02 Banshee.
The series also features numerous iconic mobile suits from previous Gundam installments, such as the RX-93 ν Gundam and the MSN-04 Sazabi while introducing brand new grunts such as the RGZ-95C ReZEL Commander Type, used by the Londo Bell task force.
Gundam Unicorn explores themes of identity, destiny, the consequences of past actions, and the human capacity for understanding and empathy.
As one of the series starting points offered by Bandai, Unicorn features a wide array of designs who all share a sleek and highly stylized silhouette while paying homage to previous designs and colour schemes, a great example of it being the Sinanju's crimson visuals. The firepower showcased by these suits is not seen at first glance for Unicorn relies more on transformation moments for the suits to engage in combat instead of always being on the lookout, which is something more commonly seen in previous installments such as Thunderbolt.
